in the shadows
and on the fringes
many doors and broken hinges
our truth, we think,
will be our end
and so we feel
we must pretend
to be something we know we’re not
to fit the label on the box
but if we realize just one thing
that in our hearts
we all are kings
let fears subside
and you will see
the vibrance
of our community
and in that thread,
that common tone
you will know
you’re not alone

through brilliant greens
the light shines
in golden pillars
on the mostly unseen
crevices
soft lush moss underfoot
amongst the languishing leaves
from the lives of trees
shed in the onset
of the passing winter
glimpses of you, dear rock
catch me from the corners
and the colors of this cherished wood
become softer
in the moment
of a footfall
in between trees
the joy of my heart
flutters as if on the wings
of a monarch
while the smell of pine
and the sound of
the distant creek
paints a smile
on my soul
