in the shadows
and on the fringes
many doors and broken hinges
our truth, we think,
will be our end
and so we feel
we must pretend
to be something we know we’re not
to fit the label on the box
but if we realize just one thing
that in our hearts
we all are kings
let fears subside
and you will see
the vibrance
of our community
and in that thread,
that common tone
you will know
you’re not alone

this poem was written for and inspired by Solace Photography’s “You Are Not Alone” project

through brilliant greens
the light shines
in golden pillars
on the mostly unseen
crevices
soft lush moss underfoot
amongst the languishing leaves
from the lives of trees
shed in the onset
of the passing winter
glimpses of you, dear rock
catch me from the corners
and the colors of this cherished wood
become softer
in the moment
of a footfall
in between trees
the joy of my heart
flutters as if on the wings
of a monarch
while the smell of pine
and the sound of
the distant creek
paints a smile
on my soul

dreams visit me
like ghosts
of a past
that hasn’t happened
yet
her mouth curving
to fit mine
for the first time
the sweetest
of moonbeams
dance on my heart
and we laugh
falling over
and through
open windows
into a roomful
of doors
and then i wake
with determination
stirring in my heart
for fitting into her curves
and making moonbeams mine

it sticks with me
fusing to my skin
and then
seeping in
filling my heart
to its brim
with a light
undefined
coming
from her eyes
into mine
for more
than a moment
as time slows
and then stands still
letting the light in
and holding
etching a memory
into my chest

like a clear morn
the smile
lights her eyes
and they talk
to me
in a song
telling me secrets
that mimic
the dawn
full of shadowy wonder
and silver slivers
of delight
dancing on dew drops
and rosy hints
feathering the misty fingers
of the veil
and it melts away
in a moment
that touches
my sun

in the space between
only i see her
a pause in motion
framed by emotion
skimming the surface
of her skin
she reveals
a depth
a beauty
a story untold
not wanting to unfold
she reflects
on memories
awash in her mind
and then
in kind
comes back
to the conversation

envelope me
and i’ll sink
neatly into you
feeling like i belong
right there in your arms
a chapter in a book
of well-worn pages
words appearing
as we do
and between the lines
we will intertwine
locking verse to rhythm
and rhyme
defining fate from shadows
as hearts define
their motive

shaking off cobwebs
we slowly wake
remnants of sleep
cling like ghosts
from another time
causing hallucinations
mind playing tricks
magic in the moment
of a new perspective
cresting the horizon
in very slow motion
and time suspends belief
until the eyes
can plainly see
what we’re really
meant to be

hope
you sing to me
sometimes
silently
call me back
to the sanity
of a world
built on reality
and not
from the sand
of landscapes
past
and surreal
where long ago
memories
still strike
pull me
feet first
from the grip
of fears
and tear down
the sinister siren song
hope
light the way
back to me
just like the sun
making rainbows
in the summer sky

half seen
she slips
into shadow
and dreams
of love and scars
sitting neatly
on her heart
in perfect syncopation
her symphony
in need
of conducting
and as she turns
toward the room
the music swells
at the moment
their eyes meet
